Why soy wax candles?
Soy candle making is one of the most popular and rewarding DIY projects for beginners - and for good reason. Unlike paraffin, which is petroleum-based and can release unwanted compounds when burned, soy wax is made from soybeans: a renewable, plant-based resource. It burns at a lower temperature, which means a longer burn time per candle, and it releases fragrance more evenly and consistently. For anyone who cares about what they bring into their home, soy wax is the natural starting point.

What you will learn
This project teaches you the complete candle-making process from start to finish. You will learn how to melt wax to the correct temperature, when and how to add fragrance oil for maximum scent throw, how to centre and secure a wick for even burning, the right pouring technique for a smooth surface, and the curing process that makes the difference between an average candle and a great one. Every step includes an explanation of why it matters, so you understand the craft - not just follow instructions.

Who is this project for?
This project is designed for complete beginners with no prior experience. If you have a kitchen scale and 30 minutes, you have everything you need to start. It is equally rewarding for creative minds looking for a new weekend hobby, parents who want to make candles together with their family, gift makers who want something genuinely personal, and anyone exploring a more conscious, transparent alternative to mass-produced candles.

What makes Woodflame different
Every ingredient in this project is cosmetic-grade, vegan, and fully transparent. Our soy wax is plant-based and clean-burning. Our cotton wicks are lead-free. Our fragrance oils are formulated for candle use. We do not sell unnamed bulk products - every Woodflame raw material comes with clear information on origin, composition, and intended application. You know exactly what goes into your candle, because that is the whole point.

The result
From a single batch of 1 kg soy wax, you will produce 8-10 beautifully scented container candles with 30-40 hours of burn time each. That is 300-400 hours of warm, scented light - enough for months of cosy evenings, or a set of thoughtful handmade gifts. Whether you make them for yourself, for someone you care about, or as seasonal decoration, these candles carry something no store-bought product can: the knowledge that you made them, with ingredients you trust.

1

Weigh the wax

Weigh 30 g beeswax pellets, 30 g shea butter, and 15 ml sweet almond oil per batch of approx. 4 tins.

2

Melt the wax

Melt the wax slowly using a water bath or by placing the jug in a pot of hot water. Heat to approximately 75-80 degrees C. Do not exceed 85 degrees C - overheating soy wax damages its molecular structure, causing poor scent binding and an uneven surface later. Stir gently and check the temperature regularly with your thermometer.

3

Cool to fragrance temperature

Remove the wax from heat and allow it to cool to approximately 60-65 degrees C. This is the ideal window for adding fragrance oil. Adding fragrance too hot causes the scent to flash off and evaporate. Too cool, and the oil will not distribute evenly through the wax.

4

Add fragrance oil

Add 5 ml fragrance oil per 100 g of wax and stir gently for 30-60 seconds. This ratio gives a pleasant, balanced scent throw. Stir slowly and consistently to ensure the oil disperses fully without introducing air bubbles into the wax.

5

Prepare your containers

Prepare your containers: While the wax cools, secure the wick centred in each glass container using the wick holder. A centred wick is essential for even burning - even 2-3 mm off-centre can cause one side to tunnel. Make sure the wick sits straight and the base tab lies flat on the bottom.

6

Pour the wax

Pour the scented wax slowly and steadily into each container, filling to 10-15 mm below the rim. Pour at a consistent speed to avoid trapping air pockets. If small bubbles appear on the surface, a gentle tap on the container can release them.

7

Cool and cure

Let the candles cool undisturbed at room temperature for 24-48 hours. Do not move them during this time. Avoid placing near windows or draughts, as uneven cooling causes the surface to crack or form sinkholes. For best fragrance performance, allow a full 48 hours of curing.

8

Trim and finish

Trim each wick to exactly 5 mm before the first burn. A wick that is too long produces smoke and soot. A wick that is too short creates a weak flame and poor scent throw. 5 mm is the sweet spot for a clean, steady burn with optimal fragrance release.

Varianten & Anpassungen

Beeswax Blend

Mix 70% soy wax with 30% beeswax for a firmer candle with a natural honey scent. Beeswax raises the melting point, making the candle more heat-stable in summer. Melt beeswax first, then add soy wax.

Seasonal Fragrance Combinations

Spring: Lavender and vanilla. Summer: Citrus and mint. Autumn: Cinnamon, clove, and orange. Winter: Pine, cedarwood, and sandalwood. Use the same 5 ml per 100 g ratio for all combinations.

Natural Colouring

Add a small amount of cosmetic-grade mica powder at the fragrance step for subtle colour. Soy wax accepts colour well in pastel tones. Avoid liquid dyes - they can affect burn quality.

Alternative Containers

Soy wax works in any heat-resistant container: vintage teacups, mason jars, concrete vessels, or ceramic bowls. Make sure the container can withstand temperatures up to 80 degrees C and has no cracks.

Profi-Tipps

Pre-heat your containers

Pre-heat your containers

Warm your glass containers gently with a hairdryer before pouring. This prevents the wax from cooling too quickly at the edges, which causes wet spots (areas where the wax pulls away from the glass). Pre-heated containers give a cleaner, more professional finish.

Doppelguss-Technik

Doppelguss-Technik

The Personal Touch

The Personal Touch

Hand-label each candle with the fragrance name, pour date, and a short personal message. A simple kraft paper label with handwritten text adds warmth that no store-bought candle can match.

Sustainable Packaging

Sustainable Packaging

Wrap candles in beeswax wraps, unbleached paper, or reusable fabric bags. Avoid plastic packaging - it contradicts the natural, conscious values behind handmade candles.

Give the raw materials as a gift instead of the finished candle. Pair a Candle Starter Set (BC-1) with a printed recipe card for a complete candle-making experience.
